Scouting Reports

Oliver worked for EvolutionMetrix (formerly Collegiate Baseball Scouting Network) as an amateur talent scout during his sophomore year of college. The mission of the company was to create a database of overlooked college baseball players (primarily Division II and III) from around the country and promote these hidden talents to various MLB teams.

Over the course of the 2018 spring season, he attended ten games of baseball programs in the Nashville area featuring players from Vanderbilt University, Lipscomb University, Belmont University, Trevecca Nazarene University and their various opponents. In total, he collected data for over twenty players and have displayed a few of those scouting reports below.

Below: Josh Martinez – Lipscomb University | Jordan Carr – University of North Carolina, Asheville | Brad Harrison – Southern Illinois University| Jack Riley – University of Massachusetts, Lowell | Kyle Hubbuch – University of Northern Alabama

Physical Description: A lot of room left to grow physically, wiry frame but lean body and clear athlete.

ML Comparison: Mallex Smith

Hitting Ability – Present (35), Future (50): stays on pitches and tracks ball well, higher velocities will test bat speed early on

Power – Present (25), Future (35): all depends on how well he fills out physically, however shows ability to drive the ball with some force

Running Speed – Present (50), Future (60): moves very well, fast out of the box

Baseball Instincts  – Present (40), Future (50): seems to understand the game at a good level

Aggressiveness – Present (60), Future (60): best part of his game, could be reigned in a little, but aggressive approach allows him to attack the pitcher and not the other way around

Summation: Already drafted by Tampa Bay Rays in 39th round of 2016 MLB Draft. Great eye at the play and has an aggressive, yet selective approach that yields success. Currently possesses lean, athletic frame with room left to develop and fill out. Not a serious home run threat right now, but has shown the ability to drive the ball with an easy swing and could add power through physical growth.

Arm/Delivery Mechanics: easily repeated delivery, does not generate enough velocity however

Physical Description: tall with a good frame and room to grow, broad shoulders

ML Comparison: Matt Moore

Fastball (velo: 72-74 mph) Present (25), Future (35): makes up for lack of velocity with good control, very confident throwing it

FB MovementPresent (40), Future (45): drew many swing and misses off of his FB, including four strikeouts

Curve (velo: 58-64 mph) – Present (30), Future (35): mixed bag of effective CBs and some hangers, overall decent pitch that can draw outs

Change (velo: 64 – 66 mph) – Present (40), Future (50): confident 3rd pitch, threw it multiple times with full count for strikes

Control: – Present (50), Future (55): good command, seems locked in on every pitch

Poise: – Present (65), Future (65): unfazed with runners on base, good rapport with catcher

Aggressiveness: – Present (60), Future (70): attacked early, getting many first pitch strikes, didn’t back down when falling behind in count either

Summation: Good size and room to fill out the rest of his body. While his fastball certainly won’t light up a radar gun, he combines his control, aggressiveness and baseball IQ to get ahead of batters and get quick outs. A sharper curveball would allow him to diversify his pitches more as he is somewhat fastball-heavy, however he knows what he’s doing on the mound and communicates well with his catcher. Changeup is developing nicely into a reliable secondary and is able to slow it down enough to get hitters off balance. Strong pickoff move keeps runners honest at first – seems mature commanding the mound.

Arm/Delivery Mechanics: methodical, easily-repeated delivery. Gets to same spot with front knee on each wind-up and maintains sam Transfers weight well using a steady, balanced lower half.

Physical Description: tall, imposing build. Still young with room to grow and fill in. Already possesses good lower body strength. Slanted shoulders. Big hands, easily manipulates the ball.

ML Comparison: Drew Pomeranz

Fastball (velo: 74-78 mph) Present (30), Future (45): threw fastball for many first-pitch strikes. Ball jumps off hand, uses over-the-top delivery

FB MovementPresent (30), Future (45): some slight cut movement, but fastball strength is in location

Curve (velo: 63-67 mph) – Present (40), Future (50): great 12-6 movement with late break, produces many swing and misses. Threw for first pitch for strikes

Change (velo: 70 – 72 mph) – Present (25), Future (35): developing third pitch. Did not throw much, but was effective following his fastball. Will require a greater change from his fastball to be viable against better competition

Control: – Present (45), Future (55): excellent command of all pitches, many first pitch strikes and never seemed to fall behind in the count

Poise: – Present (50), Future (60): pitched with a quick rhythm, no pause in between pitches, focused and ready to attack on every delivery

Aggressiveness: – Present (50), Future (65): confident in his stuff, attacked hitters with first pitch strikes and switched between fastball and off-speed pitches effectively

Summation: Big balance left. Methodical and repeated delivery. Clears body well and all parts of motion appear to move in sync. Establish approach forcing pitchers to swing at first pitch fastballs or look at well-located curveballs for strikes. Usually ahead in count early. Dominates the mound with his size and over-the-top motion – physically imposing. Hides ball behind his head and has batter to read ball out of hand.

Chase Swings – Fastball 2
Chase Swings – Breaking Ball 10
Chase Swings – 3rd Pitch 4
Hard Contact – Fastball 3
Hard Contact – Breaking Ball 3
Hard Contact – 3rd Pitch 0

Arm/Delivery Mechanics: delivery is very disjointed with a lot of moving parts, however he is able to repeat it and make it work. Takes the ball very far behind his body during windup making it difficult for the batter to pick up early

Physical Description: lean build, good pitching frame; likely fully developed as a redshirt junior

ML Comparison: Rick Porcello

Fastball (velo: 80-84 mph) Present (25), Future (25): not much confidence with pitch, but used effectively to keep hitters off balance

FB MovementPresent (20), Future (25): very flat, batters expecting fastball connected well often

Curve (velo: 68-72 mph) – Present (40), Future (45): very good curve, easily best pitch, delivery helps conceal it out of his hand; good late break

Change (velo: 75 – 76 mph) – Present (30), Future (35): deceptive pitch, looks like his fastball out of hand, nice late fade to throwing side

Control: – Present (35), Future (40): does not locate fastball well, but throws curveball around edges of the zone for strikes. Controlled waned towards end of appearance with heightened pitch count

Poise: – Present (45), Future (55): pitched out of some tough jams early in game (1st and 3rd no outs, man on 3rd 1 out), showed a lot of competitive energy after adversity

Aggressiveness: – Present (50), Future (50): threw many first pitch curveballs in the zone, loves the pitch and throws it in any count for strikes. Less aggressive with his fastball

Summation: Pitched with a lot of energy and worked his way out of difficult situations. His fastball does not have enough bite nor velocity to rely on, but mixed his pitches well and is able to add some perceived velocity by hiding his arm behind his body in his delivery. His curveball is good and fools many batters, but it was easy to see batters picking it up better the third time around the lineup. One concern is his arm action because of the already funky motion combined with his volume of curveballs thrown. However, despite its flaws, his windup is repeatable and he works with good tempo. Changeup will benefit if he is able to improve fastball movement, but as it stands is a decent third pitch. Interesting player with some caution flags, but possesses baseball knowledge to adapt and could find some success.

Kyle Hubbuch – University of Northern Alabama

Scout Date – February 20, 2018

Player Name Kyle Hubbuch
Class Senior
Scout Name Oliver Green
Player School (full name) University of Northern Alabama
Conference Gulf South
Height (inches) 73
Weight 230
Throwing Side (R/L) R
Batting Side (R/L/S) L
Opponent School Trevecca Nazarene
Opponent Conference Great Midwest Athletic
At – bats 5
Walks
Hits 2
Runs 1
Stolen Bases
RBI 2
Home-1st time (X.X – seconds)
Number of Swings 8

Length of At-Bat (pitches) 6
Hard Contact – Pull side 1
Hard Contact – Middle
Hard Contact – Opposite Field 1
BP Home Runs – Pull side
BP Home Runs – Middle 1
BP Home Runs – Opposite Field 1

Stance/Hit Approach: covers entire plate and is not afraid to swing, takes very aggressive hacks and drives the ball with ease

Physical Description: big bulky, first baseman with powerful lower half, athletic build

ML Comparison: Logan Morrison

Hitting Ability – Present (40), Future (50): good hitter, but aggressive swing makes for boom-or-bust type contact

Power – Present (55), Future (65): ball jumps off of bat, power to all fields, hit 1st inning HR over large left-center wall

Running Speed – Present (25), Future (30): long strides, but does not move great

Base RunningPresent (30), Future (30): N/A

Arm Strength – Present (45), Future (45): nothing special, snaps ball off in “around-the-horns”

Arm Accuracy – Present (40), Future (40): not much action

Fielding – Present (40), Future (50): wasn’t tested, however looked capable in warmups

Range – Present (30), Future (35): N/A

Baseball Instincts  – Present (45), Future (55): has good approach at the plate, stays back on off-speed and looks to drive the other way

Aggressiveness – Present (45), Future (50): good aggressiveness at plate, however needs to be reigned in somewhat, swung at some pitches that were clearly out of the zone

Summation: Crowds plate and attacks pitches in the strike zone without hesitation. Aggressiveness leads to some swing and misses, but drives the ball when he connects. He is likely done with the majority of his growth, however his physical profile translates to real power already as he has shown an ability to hit the ball with authority to all fields. Has tools to find success at next level, improved pitch recognition against better pitching will be crucial in reducing swing and misses.
